Why do the pittsburgh steelers and houston texans have a G U memorial on their jerseys?

It's for former player, and president (?) of the NFL Player's ociation Gene Upshaw who died recently. It's not just the Steelers and Texans. The Jets and Dolphins have it, too. My guess is that all teams have it.
