How do the points trolls work?

When you start noticing the points trolls anticipate an attack of thumbs down trolls. The reason they want points is to level their account up to level 2 so they can thumbs down. This has been going on for ages in the travel section. If you go look in the Germany travel section some of the answers have 100+ thumbs down. It's really annoying.
